POLLENSA INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL - 2011

The fiftieth Pollensa Music Festival runs from the start of July to the end of August. All concerts are staged in the Cloister of Sant Domingo in Pollensa town.

Concerts start at 22.00. Tickets can be bought from the tourist offices in Pollensa and Puerto Pollensa

Saturday, 2 July:
Opening concert "Don Pasquale" by the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearics and the Choir of the University of the Balearic Islands. 45 / 35 euros.

Saturday, 9 July:
José Mercé. One of Spain's leading flamenco singers. 45 / 35 euros.

Friday, 15 July:
Noa. She is an Israeli singer who draws on influences as diverse as Paul Simon, jazz, classical and pop and who has performed with artists such as Stevie Wonder. Her latest work has been a fusion with Yemenite songs. 45 / 35 euros.

Saturday, 6 August:
Hang Nguyen. Vietnamese female guitarist - classical. With Joana Pons piano. Music by Vivaldi, Granados and Rodrigo. 30 / 20 euros.

Saturday, 13 August:
Chamber Orchestra of the National Theatre of Prague. Music by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Dvorak. 35 / 25 euros.

Saturday, 20 August:
Fabián Carbone. Argentinian bandoneon and tango musician who has performed with symphony orchestras. 30 / 20 euros.

Wednesday, 24 August:
Borodin Quartet. Moscow-based string quartet. Music by Haydn, Shostakovich and Brahms. 30 / 20 euros.

Saturday, 27 August:
Leonidas Kavakos. Greek classical violinist considered to be one of the finest of his generation. With Enrico Pace on piano. Will play music by Beethhoven. 30 / 20 euros.

12:00: Sampling of local cuisine (under the charge of restaurants Brisas, Iru, L'Illa and Siller).

20:00: Children's party with the group Giravoltes.

21:30: Folk dance with Aires de la Cala and pipers.

19:00: Procession with the Pollensa drum and cornet band.

MARE DE DÉU DE LA VICTORIA FIESTA 2011 - LA VICTORIA, ALCUDIA

These celebrations are held around the hermitage of La Victoria. This is in the mountains above the old town of Alcúdia. To get to La Victoria, head for Bonaire from the old town and then continue on the road that twists around the mountain for some 2 kilometres to the hermitage. This road is a bit hairy, especially at night. Taxis are advisable as there is also a fair amount of drinking to be done!!

The La Victoria celebration is one of the most traditional of the local fiestas.

Friday, 1 July:
18:00: The famous local race.

20:00: Eucharist.

22:00: Fritters and brandy for all.

22:30: Mallorcan party with performances by the groups - Tacàritx and Sarau Alcudienc.

00:30: The burnt rum tradition.


Saturday, 2 July:

10:00: Rockets fired from the town hall (Alcúdia) and procession with the Alcúdia Municipal Music Band.

11:30: Arrival of dignitaries at La Victoria accompanied by the music band.

12:00: Traditional Eucharist with the offer of camomile.

12:30: Races and games for young and old.

14:00: Paella.

16:30: Ball de Bot - traditional Mallorcan dance and music.

SANT PERE (SAN PEDRO) FIESTA 2011 - PUERTO ALCUDIA

Thursday, 23 June:
18:00: Sant Pere market. Paseo Marítimo (every evening till 29 June).

19:30: Procession as celebration of the 20th anniversary of Alcúdia Radio. Leaves Es Clot beach, Barcarès and goes to the old town and then onto the port and a "trempo" (Mallorcan salad) supper.

20:30: Welcome to the fiestas by the giants of Alcúdia. Paseo Marítimo.

21:30: Music show with "Wonderbrass". Paseo Marítimo.


Friday, 24 June:
11:30: Swimming races. From the Xara building to Alcúdiamar.

18:30: Breaking of pots and sack races. Old pier.

20:30: Exhibition of pictures and paintings, "Oxímorons Apologètics", Miguel Àngel Salvó Reyes, Can Torró library, Alcúdia (open till 17 July).

22:00: Popular dance with the school of "ball de bot", Sarau Alcudienc, Tacàritx and Música Nostra. Paseo Marítimo.


Saturday, 25 June:
10:00: Beach volleyball. Sports zone on the beach in Ciudad Blanca (top of the Bellevue mile).

10:00: Sandcastle building competition. On the beach by the Xara building (right by the marina).

19:00: Opening of exhibition on "professional fishing in Alcúdia" at the Confraria de Pescadors, old pier (open also 28 June from 19:00 to 22:00).

21:00: Sardine supper and music. Tickets - one euro. Performance of fisherman songs by the group Sotavent. The old pier off the Paseo Marítimo.

23:30: Sant Pere Pirate Fiesta. Till 06:00. Plaça Gabriel Roca, next to the Commercial Port. DJs Gaspar Sampol and Miquel Rocamar. Best of 80s, 90s and current-day music. Supported by local bars, such as Enjoy and Shamrock.


Sunday, 26 June:
16:30: Beach volleyball finals. Sports zone on the beach in Ciudad Blanca (top of the Bellevue mile).

19:00: Children's party. Bouncies, foam, etc. Plaça de cas Vicari.

22:00: Concert with the music band of Alcúdia, the town choir of Alcúdia with a concert of gospel music. Paseo Marítimo.

11:00: Street procession with the Alcúdia music band.

11:15: Gathering of Alcúdia fishermen. At the Plaça Constitució in Alcúdia town, accompanied by the Alcúdia music band and dignitaries.

12:00: Solemn mass. Puerto Alcúdia church, C. Hostaleria.

14:00: Traditional lunch for retired fishermen. At the Cases de Son Sant Martí.

19:00: Mass at the Puerto Alcúdia church (C. Hostaleria), followed by the procession with the image of Sant Pere, accompanied by fishermen and the Alcúdia music band and then flotilla on the bay.

22:00: Immortal Abba. Spectacular on the Paseo Marítimo.

00:30: Grand fireworks display. Beach in front of the Xara building.

SA POBLA POTATO FAIR 2011

The third potato gastronomy fair in Sa Pobla takes place on 3 and 4 June from 19.30.

Dishes priced from one to three euros will be available at numerous bar and restaurants in the town, dishes ranging from cheese-coated cod with potato to hamburgers with fried onion and potato and to desserts, such as chocolate mousse with potato.
