16 January: SANT ANTONI ABAT (EVE). This is one of the island’s more important celebrations, on the 17th there being ceremonies blessing animals, but on the evening of the 16th there are events in most towns and villages for the eve of Sant Antoni. The highlight of these is the appearance of devils. All a bit mysterious, but lightened by bonfires, food and drink. Alcúdia town, Puerto Pollensa, Pollensa all have their own events as do Campanet, Muro and especially SA POBLA, which is arguably the most important of the lot. NIT BRUIXA (witches’ night in effect) attracts people from across the island. Events typically start from around 20:00 or 21:00 and go on into the wee smalls.
