ALCUDIA EXTREME OPEN WATER SWIM - 3 September

The annual seven-kilometre open water swim from Formentor across the bay of Pollensa to Mal Pas in Alcúdia takes place this Saturday, 3 September.

The race starts at 09.00 from Formentor. There are different categories of contestant, male and female, and the maximum time allowed to make the crossing is four hours.

These celebrations are held around the hermitage of La Victoria. This is in the mountains above the old town of Alcúdia. To get to La Victoria, head for Bonaire from the old town and then continue on the road that twists around the mountain for some 2 kilometres to the hermitage. This road is a bit hairy, especially at night. Taxis are advisable as there is also a fair amount of drinking to be done!!

The La Victoria celebration is one of the most traditional of the local fiestas.

SA POBLA POTATO FAIR 2011

The third potato gastronomy fair in Sa Pobla takes place on 3 and 4 June from 19.30.

IRONMAN 70.3 TRIATHLON - ALCUDIA

The Thomas Cook-sponsored Ironman triathlon takes place throughout the Saturday.

The three stages will be as follows:

The 1.9 kilometre swimming circuit will be between the Alcudiamar marina and the Sunwing Resort in Puerto Alcúdia.

Cycling (90.1 kilometres) will go from the Magic roundabout in Puerto Alcúdia into Alcúdia town and then out on the coast road to Puerto Pollensa, going off to Pollensa, up into the mountains to Lluc and then back via Sa Pobla and finishing by coming along the Avenida Tucan (the Hidropark road) to Magic.

The running (21.1 kilometres) will be a circuit from Alcudiamar to Magic, along the Carretera Arta, past where the canal enters the bay and to just short of the Platja d'Or hotel and then back along the beach.

There are different age groups taking part and male and female races. It all gets underway from 08:00. The final cut-off finish line will be at 17:30, but the professionals and the winner are expected to finish by around 12.00.

Please note that roads in Puerto Alcúdia, Alcúdia town as well as towards and into Puerto Pollensa and onwards will be closed for periods of the day. The Carretera Arta from the Magic roundabout into the port will be closed completely from Monday, 9 May to allow for preparation.

Alcúdia will be staging what is called an "explosion of colour" over the weekend of 5-6 March, with food, parades and satire (masks to depict politicians and other public figures and celebrities).

In Pollensa, the "Rua" parade (which will be on the Saturday, 5 March, from around 17:00) is open to anyone, children included, who fancies winning prizes of up to 500 euros.

In Puerto Pollensa, its own "Rua" takes place on Thursday, 3 March, gathering in front of the hotel Daina at 16.30 with a route along Joan XI, Calle Elcano, back down on to the front and then along the Paseo Anglada Camarasa.

Celebrations for Sant Antoni take place in Pollensa, Puerto Pollensa and Alcúdia, but by far the most important and spectacular are those in Sa Pobla which go on through the night of 16 January. This is a fiesta that shouldn't be missed as it is one of the biggest parties in Mallorca and is attended by people from all over the island.

The annual tourist day involves beach activities in the morning - from 09:30. These include beach volleyball, football, Zumba, kids' games and a rock and roll party. They take place on the sports beach at Ciudad Blanca in Puerto Alcúdia (top of the Bellevue Mile).

At 13:30, there is a buffet lunch for those taking part.

In the evening, the location shifts to the Paseo Marítimo (promenade). From 19:30 there is a flea market, then a mini disco and at 21:00 a musical show.

(Events all mainly take place in and around the market square. Passeig de Pere Ventayol, Passeig de Mare de Déu de la Victoria and Plaça de Carles V all basically mean the market area. Other locations include the church and by the church, the bullring and Plaça de la Constitució, which is the square in the centre of the old town. Some events take place outside the old town - at the sports hall, the tennis club and the sports beach, all in Puerto Alcúdia.

These celebrations are held around the hermitage of La Victoria. This is in the mountains above the old town of Alcúdia. To get to La Victoria, head for Bonaire from the old town and then continue on the road that twists around the mountain for some 2 kilometres to the hermitage. This road is a bit hairy, especially at night. Taxis are advisable as there is also a fair amount of drinking to be done!!

The La Victoria celebration is one of the most traditional of the local fiestas.

CRESTATX - EASTER FIESTA 2010

Tuesday, 6 April

This event starts at 09:00 with bell-ringing at the parish church in Sa Pobla and is followed by the pilgrimage to Crestatx. During the day there is solemn mass at the oratory (11:00), bag-pipes and ximbomba (traditional instrument). In addition, there are games and Mallorcan dances, and picnics take place. At 18:45, everyone returns to Sa Pobla and at 19:45 there is a final popular dance in the Plaça Major. There is also a free bus service that shuttles between Sa Pobla and Crestatx.
